The most common way to build up your professional network has to be LinkedIn. Being a business owner, the first thing you should do if you want to grow is to sign up (if you haven’t already) and use it to its full potential! Once you have done that…the steps below will all make more sense!

Whether you are a busy business owner, experienced business person, living a corporate life, just getting your career started or even a student looking to build up your connections ready to take on the world – this quick guide can help you out!

LinkedIn is the perfect place for networking! With access to literally millions of like-minded professionals across all sectors, connecting and networking with people who are in similar industries or just a general interest to you and your business has never been so easy! Make sure that your sign up to LinkedIn!

It is super common to unintentionally lose touch with people. It is really easy to get caught up with things in your work or personal life and forget about trying to develop yourself personally to help your future self. When life seems to be on the busy side, the likes of connecting and networking can seem like a pointless and irrelevant ordeal – especially if you are worried about how to do it!

#1 | Set Reminders

Ok, here this out BUT have you considered setting reminders, prompts, alarms etc to remind you to get in touch with your network. Depending on how often you want to connect and network, you should set reminders up every month reminding you to reach out to the people that you want to speak too. This is an easy way to build rapport but it will also ensure that you keep in regular contact with the people who you value most – whether it be clients, potential clients or simply people you want to help build up your support network.

#2 | Set Monthly Growth Goals

Similar to reminders, by setting monthly growth goals, it can help ensure you are staying on top of your work and pushing your network growth. Aim to increase your network by 50 people a month then move up to a 100 then 150 and so one. The key is not just sending away connection requests, you need to focus on ensuring someone who is part of your growth network a quality connection, can be of value, willing to talk and engage with you to help your relationship and rapport grow and lead to big things.

#3 | Connect > Meet New People!

Now, this seems self-explanatory BUT there is a better way for you to do it! Most people when they are trying to network will just go through their suggestions or type in a keyword into the search and hit connect on anyone they see. Now that does work and does actually build up your network, however what if you could personalise connection requests? Well, you can!

Just click on someone’s actual profile who you want to connect with, click the connect button there and then a box will pop up offering you to add a message. Adding a simple and quick message will not only help you introduce yourself, it will help you spark a conversation!

#2 | Like > Generate Some Intrigue

If want a quick and risk free way to get noticed, a simple like can go a long way. Everyone gets notified for likes so by liking a post, anyone who you have made contact with during points 1 and 3 will have a lasting impact on them. Create the connection and once you start liking, it will process positively in their mind. Especially if you like their posts that are underperforming too – showing this interest will mean a lot to them too and help bring you closer.

#3 | Comment > Spark Conversation

Commenting is a very powerful tool. Personally, I started doing this regularly and I have no looked back since. The key is commenting not just with connections but anything that interests you or you have an opinion or insight or information on! Commenting on posts from people who you are close with will help spark a conversation within the comments or even through the inbox. This spark of conversation can lead to great things too if done in the right way!

Take this as an example, I actually commented on a LinkedIn post created by the Head of HR for the supermarket ASDA. Now I am not connected with him or anyone related to the post but off the back of my comment, I got into talking to him in the comments. He sent me a connection request and then we continued talking in the inbox and he has helped me get tips and tricks about what businesses want to hear at interviews and during the application stage and what the expect from you.

#4 | Share > Grab Attention

This is by far the biggest way to create a lasting impression. This method is definetely the best way to grab attention of anyone who you want to build a strong and lasting connection with. This will make their day! When you share a post (preferably with a comment too), you will grab their attention and also they will value you highly because of how kind they will view your gesture. As a result, they will also start returning the favour and helping you out too and you can build from this!
